Promoting Safe Road User Behavior
Why This Matters
More than 90% of road crashes worldwide are caused by human error. In Rwanda, unsafe behaviors like speeding, distracted driving, ignoring traffic rules, and lack of pedestrian awareness are leading contributors to traffic fatalities. These behaviors aren’t just mistakes—they’re preventable threats to life.
At SafeRoutes4x, we believe that the first step toward safer roads is to transform the way people think, behave, and interact in traffic—whether they are pedestrians, drivers, or passengers. That’s why we invest in education, peer influence, and public awareness that leads to lasting behavioral change.
Our programs & initiatives
We conduct community-based public awareness campaigns that are:
- Culturally relevant and community-led
- Targeted toward high-risk locations
- Informed by data and delivered through local voices, events, and media
We bring road safety education directly to the streets through:
- Public dialogue forums and community workshops
- Crash simulations and live demonstrations
- Road safety days and exhibitions that attract families, riders, and local leaders
These events are hands-on and designed to spark conversations, emotional connection, and practical understanding of road safety rules
Children and youth are not only among the most vulnerable road users—they’re also the most influential change agents. We work directly with:
- Students to establish active school-based road safety clubs
- Teachers to deliver engaging and relevant safety content
- Parents and school communities to build consistent safety messages at home and school
To build a sustainable safety culture, we train and empower youth peer educators across all 30 districts of Rwanda. These trained students:
- Lead peer-to-peer learning in classrooms
- Host safety events and awareness drives
- Create social media content, posters, and drama pieces for younger audiences,
They are the face and voice of safer roads in their communities.
Drivers and motorcycle riders are central to road safety. We are creating Professional Driver and Rider Clubs across Rwanda to:
- Promote peer accountability and leadership
- Offer structured road safety training and refresher sessions
- Serve as safe spaces for drivers to share challenges and solutions
- Provide a direct link between road users and local safety authorities
These clubs improve road etiquette, reinforce national driving standards, and build a strong, responsible driving culture.
Our outreach doesn’t stop in physical spaces. We amplify our campaigns through:
- Social media campaigns with youth-generated content
- Local radio and TV partnerships for mass education
- WhatsApp broadcast groups for community safety updates
This ensures road safety messaging reaches both rural and urban audiences, consistently and accessibly.
- 50,000+ people reached with life-saving road safety education
- 40 school-based road safety clubs actively engaging students
- 300 trained youth peer educators leading community change
- 20 driver & rider clubs promoting professionalism and accountability
- Measurable behavioural improvements among drivers, riders, and pedestrians
